Anita Goodesign Butterfly Studies Book

Butterflies have long been an essential element of Stephen Wilson’s work, appearing throughout many of his art pieces over the years. Dozens of butterfly variations have been created for Anita Goodesign, each exploring the beauty, movement, and intricate detail found in nature. More recently, Stephen Wilson began developing large-scale butterfly wall installations, featuring dimensional butterflies designed to stand freely as striking decorative art.

After showcasing these pieces at a recent event, the enthusiastic response inspired the release of these designs for Anita Goodesign customers. The original wall-mounted butterflies, which sell in the artist’s studio for $200–$600 each, feature exceptional detail and are designed as large, standalone works of art.

The Butterfly Studies Collection brings that same artistic vision into embroidery. Unlike previous Signature Butterfly designs—typically stitched between 2.5" and 5"—this collection was intentionally created for larger embroidery sizes to allow for extraordinary detail. The designs begin at 6 inches and extend up to 12 inches, creating butterflies with remarkable texture, shading, and stitch complexity unlike anything previously produced.

Each butterfly in the series is based on a real butterfly species, carefully studied and digitized stitch by stitch to recreate the unique markings and delicate structure found in nature. The finished designs are intended to be displayed as framed artwork or arranged as a curated collection of embroidered specimens on a wall.

For over seven years, the artist has been creating formed butterfly artwork for galleries and installations. With the Butterfly Studies Collection, embroiderers can now create their own stunning butterfly displays at home.

The complete set includes 50 butterfly designs, packaged with a full-color printed book.
